Rainbow Beach: Another impressive travel destination in Australia
Another impressive travel destination in Australia, is Rainbow beach. The name of the town is obtained from the rainbow-coloured sand dunes surrounding the settlement. But there is a myth believed by Kabi people, dunes were coloured when Yiningie, a spirit represented by a rainbow, plunged into the cliffs after doing battle with an evil tribesman.
Rainbow Beach is a coastal town in south-eastern Queensland. By road, Rainbow Beach is located 75 km from the Bruce Highway town of Gympie, and 239 km from the Queensland state capital, Brisbane.
Much of the sand of this beach colors stem from the rich content of minerals in the sand, including rutile, ilmenite, zircon and monazite. A black dune of ilmenite sands, overgrown by dune vegetation can be found north west of the main town and offers a secret place of beauty for the nature enthusiast. This is currently being removed for sale in China with complete removal expected to take two years.
The beach is long with its open sea. Swimming sometimes is dangerous due the strong currents. For Surfers , it is a heaven beach break with isolated picks in the whole extension. In the end of the beach, there is a place called Double Island Point, with perfect right waves, in a bottom of sand and attracts most local surfers.
Rainbow Beach is a small town but it has been growing very much in the last years due to the tourism. At the 2006 census, Rainbow Beach had a population of 999.The lifesaving club is at side beach where a big balcony provides a beautiful view of the sea; they serve excellent food, and a very cold beer, very affordable.
