Mentawai Tsunami- Oh Mentawai
Mentawai Oh Mentawai......
Mentawai Tsunami, The quake in Mentawai occurred Monday, October 25 at 21:40 pm. BMKB lifted a tsunami warning an hour later. The day after, in the afternoon has been just caught that tere was a tsunami as high as 3-7 meters in Mentawai Island. Delay in this information because BMKG does not have monitoring equipment around Mentawai, the only in Padang. At least 313 people were killed by Mentawai tsunami.
Tsunami Mentawai – Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics judged too hastily lifted the tsunami warning potential after 7.2 magnitude quake in Mentawai Island, West Sumatra (Sumatra), so that the victims fell. In the eyes of terrestrial experts, what BMKG did at that time was correct.
“It was not repealed, but it was finished. BMKG correctly announced it, but it takes time to find where its position. While with such time, waves were road,” said Deputy of Earth Sciences Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), Heri Harjono in his office, Jl Gatot Subroto, South Jakarta, Thursday (28/10/2010).
Residents who near the beach felt the big earthquake, continued Heri, should not have to wait for the announcement from BMKG. In the event of strong earthquakes, they must immediately run to anticipate the event of a tsunami.
“So do not rely on the system only. People should have awareness. Except that the earthquake was far away,” he said.
In other words, added Heri, earthquake be an early warning for the residents to immediately save themselves. Because, BMKG take up to 4 minutes for launch of earthquake as well as a tsunami warning in certain locations. Meanwhile, the tsunami wave has been moving to shore.
“So my personal opinion, BMKG is right. Pity, that BMKG’ve worked but people judge them. I hope that once again there is a warning, people immediately go, because our ares were also near the coast,” he said.
